Lift traction systems can be classified in three main group as geared, gearless and hydraulic.Physical and architectural properties of a structure are important factors for selection of the lift traction systems.

Hydraulic traction can be suitable for a heavy duty lift which is designed for a factory building. On the other hand, gearless traction is required for high speed lifts in high rise buildings.
